Ford’s India Return: Which SUVs Could Come Next?
Share
Ford’s India story is once again attracting attention. After ending local vehicle production in 2021, the company is rebuilding its presence around the Chennai facility, although its currently confirmed manufacturing plan is focused on powertrains for export markets. There have also been speculation about a wider focused EV manufacturing based in Chennai more recently, although Ford has yet to announce an official programme.
This has naturally brought back one big question for Indian automotive enthusiasts: if Ford eventually returns to selling vehicles in India, which SUVs could lead the comeback?
Ford Everest Could Be the Biggest Name
The Ford Everest, previously known in India as the Endeavour, remains one of the strongest candidates for a future Ford India lineup. The latest-generation SUV offers a modern design, premium cabin and genuine body-on-frame off-road capability.
The Everest also shares its global platform with the Ford Ranger, making both vehicles strategically relevant if Ford decides to build a premium SUV and lifestyle-vehicle portfolio in India.
However, Ford has not officially announced an India launch date for the Everest, so its return should still be considered a possibility rather than a confirmed launch.
Ford Ranger Could Join the Lineup
The Ford Ranger could give Ford an entirely different opportunity in India. Globally, the Ranger has become one of Ford’s most important pickup trucks, with multiple powertrain and performance variants available across international markets.
Its connection with the Everest also makes a potential Ranger-Everest strategy particularly interesting for India. A premium pickup could appeal to buyers looking for something more distinctive than a conventional SUV.
An official launch of the Ranger in India is yet to be confirmed, however.
Ford Bronco: Already Available Through Specialist Imports
The Ford Bronco is a little different from the Everest and Ranger because Indian enthusiasts can already access the model through specialist imports, even though Ford does not officially sell it through its Indian retail network.
The high-performance Bronco Raptor is particularly appealing to off-road enthusiasts, with its aggressive wide-body design, specialised suspension and powerful twin-turbo V6.
Friday Night Cars brings the Ford Bronco Raptor to customers in India through the specialist import route, handling sourcing, import-related processes and delivery. This gives Indian buyers an opportunity to own the globally positioned off-road SUV without waiting for an official Ford India launch. Friday Night Cars – Ford Bronco Raptor in India
Could Ford Bring EVs to India?
Ford’s future EV strategy could become another important part of the India story. Recent reports have discussed the possibility of expanding the Chennai facility into a larger EV manufacturing hub, potentially covering electric vehicles, batteries and motors.
However, Ford has clarified that its currently announced Chennai programme remains focused on export-oriented powertrain manufacturing. There is no official confirmation yet of a new Ford EV production programme for the Indian market.
What Could Ford’s Comeback Look Like?
If Ford eventually returns to India's passenger-vehicle market, the Everest could reconnect the brand with its former Endeavour customer base, while the Ranger could bring a premium lifestyle pickup to the market.
The Bronco Raptor already has a route into India through specialist imports such as Friday Night Cars, while future Ford EVs could become relevant if the company's Chennai plans expand further.
Friday Night Cars Insight
Ford’s India story is still developing, but the direction is becoming increasingly interesting. The company has a renewed manufacturing presence in Chennai, while globally it continues to expand its SUV, pickup and electric-vehicle portfolio.
For Indian enthusiasts, Everest, Ranger and Bronco remain three Ford names worth watching. Whether they eventually become part of an official Ford India lineup—or continue reaching customers through specialist import channels—will depend on Ford’s next major decision for the Indian market.
